The Right Path?
How do you know when you are on the right path, the right side of it all?
Can it be checked somehow? Do you trust your system-check now? Do you have a regular system or just wait till it all goes south, waking up in that emergency room a-ha moment — oh shit! Somethings gotta change.
I have a system of checking if I am on the correct path or not. But now something has changed, motivating me to write now to update my clarity on the subject. This was triggered by this morning’s reading, my daily dose of inspiration.
Till now my path-check has been to measure how much I want to escape, the path I’m on, my occupation, a job, a hobby, a relationship, my whole life. That is, I know that I am going the wrong way about it when either I:
1. Do something to my body, like drink an extra cup of caffeine for a little extra ambition or for that body buzz that feels so good. Sometimes I take something stronger.
2. Or to my mind — I try to completely block out the thoughts, analysis, the torture I put myself through with an escape plan of some sort, escaping to another world, in a book, in a movie, or into another person. Lots of ways you can use another person. Don’t you agree?
Okay, almost there. Here is what I just learned, theoretically. Try this as a mental experiment first, right now — a thought experiment, okay? What if you did this several times in a day? What?
This — The first part of this path-check is the most radical for me as I spend all day in my head, it is unusual to be anywhere else.
Imagine or do this a few times during the day: experience the current situation you find yourself in, surrounded as if all the inputs coming at you from all sides of the environment are being filtered through your chest first, your physical chest. Feel or imagine sensations there. Then take those impressions in through the heart instead of through the head. Feel them again in the present. Keep allowing the heart a moment to feel the sensory inputs, before the head gets involved— here’s the check-point: (the mind will move down towards the heart like iron is drawn to a magnet) as the mind meets the heart in the chest, check if you are taking responsibility for what is going on around you. If this sounds impossible, it probably is. There is a learning curve here; this needs repetitions until you feel an inner attitude of openness and creativity as if you are creating, creating as an artist does. Are you feeling a creative force, a creative free-will joining your heart space from the outer world of experiences or are you keeping these experiences at bay, at a distance with some later, promised coping mechanism, not dealing with them directly but just tolerating the circumstances?
This exercise activates the emotional body, and it goes beyond the feelings in the heart, extending to the senses in the gut, the whole chest, and the head, coalescing into a new and wise entity that can guide your personality onto the right path.
That’s the test. You can do this all the time, every day and its merits are self-evident if you are honest.
As for me, I have neglected my heart for too long, and it is about time I started using it.
